About the American Civil Liberties Union, Houston Chapter
ACLU-Houston was founded in 1958 by attorney Ben G. Levy. The mission then and today is to defend the U.S. Bill of Rights. We are your neighbors, friends and colleagues, united in a common cause. Our growing membership, ready volunteers, staff and board work closely together to protect your rights. We serve the diverse communities throughout Southeast Texas, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or creed.
The ACLU advocates privacy, freedom from unreasonable searches, separation of church and state, humane treatment of prisoners, women’s rights, criminal justice reform, civil liberties, immigration and freedom from unconstitutional discrimination based on race, sex, age and other characteristics.
The Houston chapter has currently over 3,500 members. Our work region includes much of East Texas and the Gulf Coast. We have a local Board of Directors to provide leadership and direction. Reporting to the board are the various committees, including the Legal Review Panel, where all requests for help are considered.
Education, litigation, and legislation are the means by which we achieve positive change. Join us in making Houston and southeast Texas just, fair and free.
