Welcome to the ACLU Houston Home Page
The
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is our nation's guardian
of liberty, we work daily in courts, legislatures and communities
to defend and preserve the individual rights and freedoms
guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution
of the United States.
The ACLU was founded in 1920 by Roger Baldwin and is headqurtered
in New York City. The ACLU of Texas (Austin) has been at the
forefront of the fight for civil liberties across the state.
The ACLU Houston works closely with our national and state
organizations in order to meet the needs of our community.
The
ACLU-Houston's mission is to fight governmental abuses and
violations of the Bill of Rights wherever and whenever they
occur. Most of our clients are ordinary people who have
experienced an injustice and have decided to fight back. The
ACLU is also active in our national and states capitals, fighting
to ensure that the Bill of Rights will always be more than
a "parchment barrier" against government oppression
and the potential tyranny of the majority.
We live and work in a time of great challenge. The ACLU Houston
is doing exciting and rewarding projects in a variety of community
areas. Come be part of something special! Our members and
volunteers are dedicated to preserving the American tradition
of liberty and justice. Join
us!
