An off-duty Houston police officer shot a man Sunday after an incident on a county road in Brazoria County, according to authorities.
Investigators did not disclose what led to the altercation, which left a second man with undisclosed injuries. The shooting is being investigated by the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office and Houston police.
Brazoria County Sheriff's Lt. Russ Baker declined to comment on the shooting, which occurred at about 3:30 p.m. at County Road 824 and Texas 6.
"All I can tell you is there was an incident involving two vehicles that led to an off-duty HPD officer discharging his firearm," Baker said.
Baker refused to say if there was an argument between the officer and the two men or any details about the incident. The off-duty officer was not wearing his uniform at the time.
Baker said no firearms were found on the two injured men. Both men were transported to area hospitals. The off-duty officer, whose name was not released, was not injured.
A 14-year veteran of the department, the Houston officer has been assigned to the internal affairs division for about seven months, police said. The officer was automatically placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. Houston homicide investigators also were on the scene Sunday as required for any officer-involved shooting.
An HPD spokeswoman deferred all questions about the shooting to Brazoria County officials. Brazoria County Sheriff Charles Wagner said he could not provide the Chronicle with more information about the shooting.
The man who was shot was identified by his brother as 33-year-old Jose Antonio Hernandez. He was treated and released from a hospital late Sunday.
Hernandez's brother, Gonzalo Hernandez, 32, said his brother had been shot in the leg and suffered a wound to his shoulder. The unidentified second man was also treated and released from a hospital late Sunday.
Resident Jody Royal, 40, said she was in her barn in the 1400 block of Mildred when she heard what sounded like fireworks.
She said that by the time she got to her fence the shooting had stopped. She said she heard about four gunshots. She said she saw one man already lying face down on the ground in the parking lot of a gasoline station just off the highway.
Royal said she heard the man, whom she later learned was the off-duty officer, on his cellular phone explaining that another driver had cut him off on the roadway.
