ACLU Houston Committees

The Houston Chapter of the ACLU operates on a committee structure foundation. As such, the work of the Committees are vital to helping us meet the growing needs of our community as regards our mission.

These Committees are comprised of members and volunteers working closely with the Houston Board. With your help, we hope to increase the scope, number, and size of these Committees. It is through these that much of our work gets done.

Please go the Join Us section of this website and provide us your new/current membership information. Then, go to the Volunteer section and fill out the brief questionnaire. If you are interested in participating on one of these committees, or in serving as an ACLU intern let us know and someone will be in contact with you soon.

Legal Review

Chairperson, Michael Oeser
The LRP is at the heart of our operations. It reviews all our incoming "request help" information. From this growing list we select those requests / cases that best fit our mission and the constraints of our limited resources.

Membership

Chairperson, Floyd Brown
This Committee is responsible for membership, interns, and volunteers. As the "request help" inquiries continue to increase in these difficult days, we rely on members and volunteers more than ever. We need your support and participation. If you are a current member, please click on Join Us and fill out the information sheet. We want to know more about you and how we can communicate with you. Even if you are not a member then hit Join Us and become part of something special. Hit the Volunteer icon once you have given us your membership information and then someone will follow-up with you shortly.

Criminal Justice

Chairperson, Randall Kallinen
If you are interested in working on reform issues related to the death penalty, police enforcement, the courts, jails & prisons, and related sectors, this is the Committee for you! The ACLU Houston is doing outstanding work in this area. But, with more and more problems needing our attention in this area, we need volunteers, interns, and funds to help us protect your freedoms and liberties provided by the Bill of Rights.

Community Outreach

Chairperson, Michael D. Oeser
In the past the ACLU has focused the majority of its resources on using the legal system to uphold the Bill of Rights. In doing so it is vital that we maintain closer ties to the various groups and organizations that make up the Houston community. This Committee coordinates all community affairs, speaking engagements, educational outreach. For folks interested in helping us strengthen our relationships, this is the place for you.

Technology / Operations

Chairperson, Mary Ella Orsburn
Improving the ACLU's ability to manage information, building robust communications, and refining operations are the focal points of this Committee. If you have a background in business management consulting, technology, or you just are a "process person", become a member and let us know of your interests.

GLBT

Chairperson, Michelle Hughes
Issues affecting the GLBT community are the focus of this committee. If you are interested in getting involved with these issues, please volunteer and let us know of your interests.

We would be delighted to hear from both new and current members, as well as those seeking to work as interns in these and other Committee areas. Please go to the Volunteer icon on our home page and let us know your interests.

Come join us in making Houston a better place to live and work.
